Tumamoca: The Final Chapter
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service biologists have become aware of steep population declines in populations of Tumamoc globeberry since the species was dropped from the list of officially endangered species in 1993. In 2020, Fish & Wildlife awarded a grant to José Jesús Sánchez Escalante, University of Sonora, to revisit sites where my Mexican field crews had surveyed for the species in 1988-1989. Just this past September I concluded field work for another survey of populations my crews had surveyed from 1984-1990 in Arizona. Today, I present a synopsis of results. Tumamoc globeberry may be proposed as a threatened or endangered species in the next two years. If not proposed, or if the proposal fails, the future of Tumamoc globeberry will be very uncertain.
