Plants of Southern Ecuador from Sea Level to 13,000 Feet

Take a virtual tour of the plants and diverse plant communities of southern Ecuador, from coastal mangroves to Andean páramo. In 2022, Sue Carnahan and Curtis Smith spent three weeks birding and exploring this region, starting and ending in the port city of Guayaquil. We sampled mangrove lowlands (with mosquitoes!) and enjoyed arid scrubland and dry tropical forest (no mosquitoes!) near the border with Peru. We wandered through deciduous forests and cloud forests (wet!) on both slopes of the Andes, and we spent more than a day above treeline (windy!). Towering Ceiba trees, strange composites, bromeliads, slipperworts, and water mattresses - southern Ecuador has a little bit of everything!
