Legume phylogeny - DRAFT

Figure from publication on the relationships among 6 subfamilies in Fabaceae

Legumes of Arizona

The legume family (Fabaceae) is one of the largest plant families, is native worldwide, impacts humans on a daily basis through food, fuel, and green manure, and hosts tremendous diversity in habit, habitat and flower morphology.

In these webpages, we are building a resource that will focus on the Arizona legumes. This follows the publication of the "Legumes of Arizona – an Illustrated Flora and Reference" and will add (1) links to selected publications regarding research on bioactive compounds, (2) images of representative herbarium specimens, and (3) information about how our Arizona legumes are related to each other.

Why? In general, there is great interest in bioprospecting from native plants, evolutionary relationships predict similarities, and herbarium specimens provide visuals for understanding the legumes of Arizona. By bringing these together in one resource, we aim to reinforce those connections.
